Department of Geography, Environmental Science and Planning Courses

Programmes

The Department is situated in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Its curriculum has three areas of specialization informed by needs of the various Faculties serviced by the department. The Department offers specialization in Environmental Science from students from the natural sciences; Geographical Education from the students from Education and Humanities streams as well as Urban and Regional Planning from the Social Sciences stream.

It also supports various programmes offered in other Faculties and institutes. These include the BSc programme in the Faculty of Science and Engineering as well as other Bachelors programme in the Faculties of Education, Humanities, Social Sciences and the Institute of Distance Education where it is combined with other disciplines in the double subject major University Programme. The Education and Humanities streams specialize in Geography Education whilst the Science and Social Science streams specialize in Environmental Science and Urban &Regional Planning, respectively. The Department intends to offer the BSc in Geographic Information Science programme commencing in the 2019/20 academic year. Moreover, the department offers an MSc in Environmental Resources Management (specialization in Land and Water Resources Management) through the University’s Institute of Postgraduate Studies. A Master’s programme in Climate Change and Sustainable Development is on the cards with an intention of offering the programme in the 2020/21 academic year.

The choice of courses, however, depends on the programme under which the student is enrolled (see below). Electives are indicated in italics.
