Faculty of Education Admissions Requirements
(a) Certificate in Adult Education
This is a programme that is run over a period of two years on a part-time basis. It is intended for candidates who wish to become adult educators.
Entrance Requirements:
A minimum of Junior Certificate plus two years experience in work related to adult education. A letter of recommendation from the employer is also needed. Other alternative qualification acceptable to the University will be considered.
(b) Diploma in Adult Education
This is a two-year part-time programme intended for candidates who wish to become adult educators.
Entrance Requirements:
Candidates must have either
(i) A pass in the Certificate in Adult Education plus one year of relevant experience after completing the Certificate programme.
OR
(ii) A credit or distinction in the Certificate in Adult Education.
OR
(iii) A professional certificate obtained after a duration of NOT LESS than one academic year of full-time study from recognised institution;
AND
A Cambridge Overseas Certificate or General Certificate in Education with at least 5 subject passes:
AND
(iv) A minimum of two years practical experience in adult Education related work, supported by a letter of recommendation from the employer.
(c) Certificate in Physical Education
This is a one year, full time study programme intended to provide trained and skilled teachers in the area of physical education.
Entrance Requirements:
A minimum of teachers' qualification (Certificate, Diploma or Degree) plus two years teaching or relevant experience
(d) Bachelor of Education (Primary)
This programme is intended for qualified teachers who want to advance their knowledge in education and teaching subjects. The degree, which is of four years duration, takes the form of single major in primary Education and teaching subject options drawn from one of the following:
(i) Language - English/SiSwati
(ii) Social Studies - Geography/History/Religious Studies
(iii) Science - Biology/Mathematics/Chemistry/Physics
Entrance Requirements:
(a) Applicants will be considered for admission to year 1 of the degree if they hold:
(i) Diploma in Education (Primary or Secondary)
OR
(ii) the two-year Secondary Teachers’ Certificate
OR
(iii) the two-year Secondary Teachers’ Diploma
OR
(iv) the three-year Primary or Secondary Teachers’ Diploma in the pass category
OR
(v) a recognised equivalent qualification
Their major subjects must fit into an acceptable Year 1 Program approved by the Faculty of Education. The Subjects are:
Language Arts
Social Studies
Science
(b) A pass in the Diploma in Education(Primary or Secondary) of the University of swaziland or equivalent qualifications.
Applicants possessing the Diploma in Education (In-Service primary) or an equivalent diploma of the University of Swaziland, with overall credit pass, may be recommended, subject to Faculty of Education special regulations, to proceed to Year 2 of the B.Ed. (Primary) degree programme.
(e) Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
The Bachelor of Education, which is of four years duration, is intended for qualified teachers. The degree takes the form of a double major with the following programme:
Part 1
Year 1 Education, Academic Communication Skills and two other subjects
Year 2 Education and two other subjects
Part II Year 3 Education and one other subject
Year 4 Education and one other subject
Applicants are normally expected to offer teaching subjects for which curriculum courses exist in the faculty of Education and to continue with curriculum studies in both their chosen subjects in years 3 and 4.
Entrance Requirements:
(i) Candidates who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Education (Commerce) must have obtained a credit pass in their O-Level Mathematics. applicants will be considered for admission to year 1 of the degree if they posses:
(a) the Diploma in Education
OR
(b) the two year Secondary teachers’ Certificate
OR
(c) the two year Secondary Teachers Diploma
OR
(d) the three year Secondary Teachers’ Diploma in the pass category
OR
(e) a recognised equivalent qualification.
(ii) Applicants possessing the Diploma in Education (In-Service secondary) or the three-year Secondary Teacher’s Diploma, with an overall credit pass, may be recommended, subject to Faculty of Education Special regulations, to proceed to Year 2 of the degree programme.
(f) Direct Entry
Candidates with O-level qualifications shall be considered for direct admission into the Bachelor of Education (Secondary/ Science) if they have one of the following:
(a) A minimum of six passes in G.C.E. obtained in not more than two sittings, which must include a grade C or better in:
(i) English Language and Mathematics
(ii) Two of the following: (Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Physics, Science(Chemistry/Physics))
OR
The combination of Combined Science and Additional Combined Science
(iii) Any other subject
(b) The Cambridge Overseas School Certificate in the first or second division with a minimum of 5 credits (grade C or better in) which must include the subjects listed in (a) above.
(g) Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (Full-time)
The Post-Graduate Certificate in education (P.G.C.E.) is offered as a full-time programme, of one year duration. The applicant will normally be expected to take a curriculum studies course reflecting the subject(s) studied in the degree.
Entrance Requirements:
A recognised university degree in which one or more teaching subjects have been studied.
