Faculty of Social Science Admissions Requirements

(a) Bachelor of Arts (Social Science)
The Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) is a four year degree programme. The subjects offered are:

     Public Administration      Sociology

     Economics                      Statistics

     Geography                     Demography

     Mathematics                  Political Science

In first year students are expected to take between 5 and 7 subjects from the list above including Academic Communication Skills, Introduction to Computing for Social Science and either Elementary Quantitative Techniques or Introductory Mathematics for Social Scientists.

In years 2 to 4, a student takes courses of two major subjects depending on the available possible subject combination allowed by the Faculty of Social Science.

Entrance Requirements:

In conformity with the general regulations on the normal requirements relating to Bachelor degree programmes, each candidate must possess a minimum of six passes in the GCE O-Level obtained in not more than two sittings which must include passes at C grade or better in English Language and at least C grade or better in a minimum of four subjects drawn from the list below:

     English Literature                    Agriculture

     Physical Science                       History

     Geography                               Chemistry

     Human and Social Biology        Physics

     SiSwati                                     Biology

     Principles of Accounts               Commerce

     Bible Knowledge                       Book-keeping

     Additional Mathematics             Mathematics

     General Science                        Economics

     French

Candidates intending to major in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics and Demography must have at least a Credit in O-Level Mathematics; those who wish to major in Geography must have at least grade D in O-level Mathematics.

(b) New Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)

The new LL.B. degree is a programme covering five years of study and its complete structure can be found in the University Calendar. Introduction to Computing for Social Science and one other non-legal course elected with the approval fo the Head of the Law Department from either Economics, Political and Administration Studies, Sociology or Statistics and Demography are offered in Year I only. Research methods, a Sociology course, is offered in year II of the programme.

Entrance Requirements:

To qualify for admission to the new LL.B. degree, a candidate must satisfy the entrance requirements stipulated for admission to the Bachelor of Arts (Social Science).

(c) Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)

Entrance Requirements:

To qualify for admission to the LL.B. the following provisions shall apply:

(i) Candidates in possession of the B.A. (Law) degree with second class, lower division or higher qualification will be admitted for a period of study covering two years.

(ii) Candidates in possession of a B.A. (Law) with a second class, lower division or higher qualification or equivalent degree from other recognized institutions may be admitted for a period of study covering two years.

(iii) Candidates in possession of the B.A. (Law) degree in the Pass category may be admitted after working for a minimum period of two years in a law related field.
